This is what I did, this is who I am. Economics degree in Cologne. Joined the Gerling Group General Insurance Company(Gerling-Konzern Allgemeine Versicherungs-AG), working for the Chairman of the Board in the department Planning
and Controlling. Then in 1991, a cut. My sister-in-law was diagnosed with leukemia. I became a member of the Citizins` Initiative “Help for leukemia patients” (Hilfe für Leukämiekranke). We had one goal: to motivate people in Germany to register as potential stem cell donor. The DKMS German Bone Marrow Donor Center grew from this initiative. A few months after it’s founding, I became the CEO. Today, the DKMS is the world’s largest stem cell donor center – it has given over 40,000 patients a new chance for life. DKMS Life, a cosmetics program for women undergoing cancer treatment, was also founded in my time as Executive Manager. Supported by the cosmetics industry, DKMS Life helps give women more self-confidence to live with their cancer. Every year, more than 10,000 women participate in the courses. With help and advice on make-up, hair, and wigs, they learn to conceal visual impacts of their cancer therapy, so they don’t have to look at the illness in the mirror. Science Laboratories, the DKMS Cord Blood Bank and the DKMS Foundation, whose Chairwoman I was for
many years. DKMS donor centers were founded in USA, Poland, Spain and England, which I lead as Chairwoman of the various Boards. What moved me throughout this whole period: people’s incredible willingness to help. If asked the right way, the impossible becomes possible. Nobody believed it was possible to set up such a donor center in Germany. We did it! You can read about this in my book “Alle gegen Einen” (meaning: all against one), written with Gorden Müller-Eschenbach. It’s time for change: I became self-employed in January 2015.
